5 Highlights of Botswana14th March '16

So what are the highlights of Botswana? Botswana is absolute heaven for anyone interested in wildlife and scenery. The choice is so varied but the best of Botswana has been narrowed down to these 5 highlights of Botswana.

Mekoro in the Okavango Delta

glide through the tranquil waters of the Okavango

The Okavango Delta is a myriad of meandering papyrus filled waterways and palm-fringed islands where herds of elephants come to drink. Explore the delta by dugout canoe, gently propelled through this magical wonderland by your own knowledgeable guide. As the water ripples past you and the hippos chomp through the undergrowth, let time slow down in this serene environment.

Being in a mekoro allows you to see wildlife and the surrounding environment from a different perspective. Many of the lodges in the Okavango give you this unique opportunity, often with breakfast or lunch on a secluded island. Here you really feel as if you are the only one for miles around – which of course you are!

Star Gazing on the Salt Pansflamingoes on salt pans of Botswana

Botswana’s stark salt pans appear to stretch to eternity, meeting and fusing with the milky-blue horizon. During the wet season, large herds of zebra, wildebeest and elephant migrate westward, stalked by opportunistic lions. And in the wet season the birding is spectacular. Nata pan attracts hundreds of flamingoes to the area and seeing them at sunset is something special.

However, one of the best aspects of the salt pans is to star gaze. See the stars like you have never seen them before, pin pricks in a rich dark-blue velvet backdrop. With practically nil light pollution the stars are accentuated into unbelievable proportions and the resulting spectacle is out of this world.

Safari in Moremi

herds of buffalo in moremi, botswanaMoremi is one of the most beautiful reserves in Africa, where land meets delta to create a picturesque latticework of floodplains, lagoons, grasslands and mopane forests. Above all Moremi has spectacular ‘Big Five’ game viewing. Along with opportunities to see elephants, lion, hyena, rhino, leopard, you can spot a host of antelope, smaller mammals and over 400 species of birds, many migratory and some endangered.

A visit to Moremi is the best way to see the wildlife of Africa. You never know what you will see as you drive through this incredible area – the options are endless; herds of buffalo about 200 strong, elephants lumbering past in family groups, lion prowling through the bush or even a leopard nestled in a tree. This is the magic of a safari and Moremi is the ideal place.

A Flight over the Okavango Delta

A flight over the Okavango Delta is a privilege and certainly one of Botswana’s 5 highlights. See the Okavango Delta from the heavens; dusty ochre coloured islands dotted throughout this aquamarine world. Soar above herds of lumbering elephants as they amble along well trodden trails and spy herds of antelope dashing through the water leaving spray sparkling behind them.

These flights can be when you are travelling from one lodge to the next, so take the opportunity to get that window seat. Ask your pilot to fly low so that you can see the individual animals. You can truly experience the vastness of the Okavango and the extent of where the ‘wild things roam.’

A Chobe River Safari

houseboat on the Chobe River
A Chobe River Safari has to be one of the most impressive game viewing experiences in Africa. Watch hippos and crocodiles jostling for a riverside spots and elephant swimming with their trunks held high as snorkels. Birdlife is bountiful; pied kingfishers suspended over the water, fish eagles calling plaintively and herons pirouetting through the water. Witness these spectacular sightings by boat and watch the world drift by.

You can go in a number of different types of boat. You could spend a few days on a houseboat (pictured above) where you can let the world drift by. Here you will find yourself on one continual safari where you hardly do any moving. Alternatively you can go on a smaller river safari for the afternoon and really get up close to elephant and hippo where you can practically eyeball them.
